Mahershala Ali Wins First Golden Globe for 'Green Book'

Ali was previously nominated in 2016 for his role as Juan in Barry Jenkin's 'Moonlight.'
Mahershala Ali won his first Golden Globe for his performance as pianist Don Shirley in Green Book.This is the actor's second nomination, after receiving a nod in 2016 for his role as Juan in Barry Jenkins' Moonlight.
Ali's fellow nominees in the category were Timothee Chalamet for Beautiful Boy, Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman, Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and last year's winner Sam Rockwell for Vice.
Ali paid homage to his onscreen counterpart, Dr. Shirley, who "was a brilliant man and I just want to thank him for his passion, his virtuosity, and his dignity with which he carried himself that inspired me each and every day."
Turning to his director, Ali thanked Peter Farrelly for his "extraordinary patience between Viggo [Mortensen] and I asking for another take or emailing you at two in the morning." He also recognized his co-stars Linda Cardellini, who he called "the heart of the film," and Mortensen for pushing him every day, "even the days off weren't even days off."
Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg hosted the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Jan. 6. Tune in after the telecast for The Hollywood Reporter and Twitter's official live aftershow.
