There was a hit Gujarati play called Aandhlo Pato (Blind Man’s Buff) written by Aatish Kapadia about twenty years ago, that was turned into the Hindi film Aankhen (starring Amitabh Bachchan), about a group of blind people trained to rob a bank.

A new play, with the same title, written and directed by Anil Kakde, and adapted by the lead actor Vipul Vithlani, is not a remake, but has a visually challenged man as its protagonist-- Major Veer Pratap Singh (Vithlani), living in a secluded cottage, seeming alone, with just a dog for company.

One night, three youngsters Sonal, Vijay and Raju (Yogita Chauhan, Siddharth Bhuptani, Paresh Bhatt), break into the house, drug the dog, knock out the major, and try to open a locked door. Raju, who is deaf, has dropped his hearing aid, and becomes the initiator of a series of comic gags; things are complicated by Sonal’s muteness. Power in the cottage keeps going on the blink and the major keeps an electric radio on to know when there is light—when it goes quiet, it means the power is off.

The three make for very noisy burglars, slowed down by the communication problems and the erratic power supply. Then Veer wakes up, catches hold of Vijay, hits him on the head with his own revolver, and ties him to a chair. He does not know how many accomplices Vijay has, so there are some laughs as well as tension generated by Raju and Sonal trying to stay silent and out of the Major’s way. Just before intermission there is a murder and a twist in the tale.

In the second act, the plot goes on to a different track altogether, to explain what has gone before, including a couple of flashbacks.

Resemblance to the Fede Alvarez film Don’t Breathe (2016) could not be coincidental; added to it is a sprinkling of the comedy play See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, and a bit of the film Rang De Basanti—a proper bhelpuri mix, which works in fits and starts, and has fairly good performances by Vipul Vithlani and Paresh Bhatt. It needs to be speeded up a lot more, though, if the physical comedy is to be effective. Also, there is patriotism blended in, which is the flavour of the season.

The theme given to all the artists was 'Sri' in tribute to spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar. The evening began with beautiful Guru shlokas rendered by Shibani Sachdeva followed by Nandini Basu presenting the popular Meera bhajan- "Karam ki Gati Nyari Santo", followed by Kathak by Sunil Sunkara in the style of Kathavaachan. He presented a Harihara Stotram and a rare Vishnu Taal. This was followed by Shakti Peetha Sthapana Katha where Sunil under direction of Renu Sharma has linked stories from Tulsidas Ramcharitramanas and Lacchu Maharaj Daksh Yagna to present the incidents that lead to Sati immolating herself. This was accompanied by Amit Mishra on Tabla, Shrirang Tembe on Vocal ,Rudraksh Sakhrikar on Sarangi and Paullumi Mukheerjee on Narration.

Paullumi and Sunil presented a unique piece in Kathak theatre style - "Gandhari's curse" directed by Hemant Hazare. The anger and desperation felt by a mother who has lost all her son's was brought to life by Paullumi' s rendition of Gandhari, in dramatic and impressive manner. Sunil presented a Krishna that in contrast to Gandhari was an epitome of the Shanta Rasa. A surprise element in the end was when Sunil and Paullumi danced into a beautiful song that presented the core philosophy of the Gita -' Main hoon manzil, main hoon safar bhi, main hi musafir hoon, along with live painting of the Sri Tattva by Vijita Pillai. 'Hridayesh Utsav' which is held in the open space of the Parle Tilak High School is the biggest music festival of this metropolis. Earlier, the 'Jan Fest ' organized by the Indian Music Group used to be the only high profile open air music event. Over the last twenty five years, the 'Hridayesh' festival has surged much ahead in terms of audience participation and general impact. This year, 29th one in a row, attracted a big audience.

'Hridayesh' felicitates a senior musician every year for his or her contribution to music in general. This year elder musician Sharad Sathe, doyen of the Gwalior gharana was feliciatated and the 'Sangeeet Sevavrati' award which carried a cheque for Rs one lakh and a memento was presented to him by senior violinist Dr N Rajam.

Shashwati Mandal who opened the festival with her 'Marwa' is a highly competent singer. Her 'Marwa', in the initial phase sounded a bit sedate. She unleashed a flurry of taans while singing the fast paced ek taal bandish 'Ho Guniyan Mil' which was composed by Jagannathbuwa Purohit. She also sang a tappa which fell much below expectations. Rahul Sharma played the raga 'Rageshri' on the santoor with usual zest. Aditya Kalyanpur accompanied him on the tabla with gusto. Venkateshkumar, one of the most popular singer of our times, sang the raga 'Puriya' with practised ease. He also sang 'Pio Ri Maine' with feeling.

Mukul Shivputra , the singer whose music has a mystical touch and appeal, impressed the audience with his 'Bilaskhani Todi'. He could attract a capacity audience during a solo morning session. Budhaditya Mukherjee, India's ace sitarist was exceptionally brilliant. He played the raga 'Shyam Kalyan' which is rarely heard on the sitar. One recalls that the maestro Halim Jaffer Khan used to play this raga. Budhaditya played it in a khyal style.
Each phrase was like a bright scintillating gem. He also played the raga 'Kamod' which is a challenge because of the similarity of note structures. Dr. N Rajam and her daughter Sangeeta wrote a fitting finale to the festival with their hour long 'Darbari. The long and well shaped glissandos were deeply moving. Anand Singh compered the show with distinction.
